Buried treasure
This weekend we went to visit family in Copake New York. Copake isn't known for it's town so we took some drives slightly further a field to walk around and see the sights. On Saturday I was itching to get to an antique shop. I don't have to buy anything or even be on the look out for anything particular I just love being surrounded by history. I'm fascinated by the stories in each piece. I always wonder how a particular item came to be in some long ago person's possesion. Was it a gift? Did they save their money for a coveted object? I'm a sucker for romance and a great story and I wish I knew more about the treasures I come across in antique stores. Anyway, I made my way into Verso on Warren Street in Hudson because of a leather satchel on a funky chair outside the store. Walking in was like stepping into the past. Not just because of the things in the store but because of the store itself. Two gentlemen were sitting across a makeshift aisle talking, surrounded by vintage throw pillows, antique quilts and silver plated tea sets. The whole place smelled like someone has been smoking a pack a day in that space for the last decade. It's the kind of place I dream about (ok aside from the old cigarette smell) chalk a block full of amazing finds. Beautiful pieces of art, old books, vintage clothes and funky artifacts- I'm still kicking myself for not buying the African beaded head dress I saw tucked into a corner. Verso is the kind of shop I love, not showy and so exensive that you feel intimidated just walking through the door. It is a wonderful store in a funky upstate town that everyone should check out if ever in the neighborhood. It's well worth the stop! Their website was under construction but check in on it- it might be up and running again. Www.versofinearts.com
